Sturgeon
Sturgeon are always on tap for catch & release on the Lower Columbia River, as well as in the Columbia River Gorge and Willamette River near Portland. But Oregon sets seasons for retention of these special prehistoric game fish so it's best to call me for updates or visit Columbia River Fishing Regulations. Common Names: Pacific sturgeon, Oregon sturgeon, Columbia sturgeon, and Sacramento sturgeon. White sturgeon are the largest freshwater fish in North America and can weigh over 1,500 pounds, be 20 feet in length, and live for over 100 years. Large white sturgeon (9 feet plus) most commonly move into the Columbia River Gorge in the early spring, and spawn May through June. Keeper size fish (60 inches or less) are available year-round. White sturgeon are tough fighters -- so make sure you are ready to do battle. Many days guide boats will catch and release over 25 fish. If your lucky enough to be here on a retention date you will quickly become a coinsure of the best eating fish there is. If you like Halibut its a sure thing you'll love Oregon Sturgeon. A significant economic and cultural resource throughout Oregon, white sturgeon recently became a popular target fishery with major commercial landings in the Columbia River Gorge. In fact, Columbia River sturgeon production, with its valuable roe for caviar, is second only to the former Soviet Union's production. The Columbia River Buoy 10 is also the site of an intense sport fishery. The lesser know Tillamook Bay and Nehalem Bay guided Oregon coast fishing trips are also productive. The white sturgeon is an important fish for Native American fishermen on the Columbia River. Portland sturgeon fishing

Salmon
Chinook salmon are easily the largest of any salmon, with adults often exceeding 40 pounds (18 kg); individuals over 120 pounds (54 kg) have been reported. Chinook salmon are very similar to Coho salmon in appearance while at sea (blue-green back with silver flanks), except for their large size, small black spots on both lobes of the tail, and black pigment along the base of the teeth. Adult Chinook salmon migrate from a marine environment into the freshwater streams and rivers of their birth. They spawn only once and then die. Guide boat Chinook fishing provides the best success rates for Portland salmon fishing. Juvenile Chinook may spend from 3 months to 2 years in freshwater before migrating to estuarine areas as smolts and then into the ocean to feed and mature. Chinook salmon remain at sea for 1 to 6 years (more commonly 2 to 4 years), with the exception of a small proportion of yearling males (called jack salmon) which mature in freshwater or return after 2 or 3 months in salt water. There are different seasonal
(i.e., spring, summer, fall, or winter) "runs" in the migration of Chinook
salmon from the ocean to freshwater, even within a single river system.
These runs have been identified on the basis of when adult Chinook salmon
enter freshwater to begin their spawning migration. Oregon fishing for
Chinook salmon rivals that in Alaska.

Both the Willamette River in Portland and the Columbia River, from Astoria to Bonneville Dam, provide excellent fishing for white sturgeon.
Sturgeon have a white meat that is very rich and filling and is extremely good smoked. Smoked sturgeon averages $18.00 a pound or more at most fish markets. |
These fish are very strong and
provide plenty of exciting pole bending action when hooked, many times
leaping completely out of the water. It's always a thrill, even for the more
seasoned anglers.
Sturgeon fishing is open to
catch and release year-round and fishing is typically good throughout the
year, but the state sets the dates that anglers are able to retain them. |

Columbia River Fishing GuidesColumbia River Sportfishing offers some of the best fishing in the nation if not the world and the same holds true for the regional Columbia River Fishing Guides as they are as skilled and knowledgeable as any of their tropical or saltwater fishing guide counterparts.
Referring to Columbia River fishing as some of the the best
fishing in the world is not as bold a statement as one would think. No we
aren't talking about typical sport fishing trips with all the colorful and
acrobatic billfish that most "sportfishermen" think of when you mention
'sport fishing'. Instead we are talking about Columbia River sport
fishing, something really special that the majority of anglers, especially
anglers in the southern regions never get a chance to experience.
Portland sturgeon fishing means action packed sturgeon fishing, which means you are fishing for a fish that can reach sizes likely bigger than you are and when you catch one of these magnificent marine creatures you can take home an Oregon charter fishing story none of your fishing buddies can compete with. As fun and exciting as Sturgeon fishing is though it is not the only type of fishing on the Columbia River and your local Oregon fishing guide will also offer fishing charters for the many species of salmon and a few other species in addition to some exciting Sturgeon fishing.
